If your baby’s heading into their first summer, welcome to a whole new season of parenting questions. New sun. New heat. New SPF debates in the aisle. Plus a rotating cast of well-meaning family telling you contradictory things about hats, hydration and “don’t forget a sweater”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s the shortlist:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Under 6 Months, Shade Is the Rule<\/span><\/h3>\n

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends babies under 6 months stay out of direct sun. Load up on stroller canopies, wide-brim hats + breathable long-sleeve onesies.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. 6+ Months, Mineral Sunscreen Is the Move<\/span><\/h3>\n

Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredient, SPF 30+, broad spectrum, water resistant. Reapply every 2 hours + after every splash or towel-off. Skip anything with oxybenzone, octinoxate or added fragrance.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Babies Overheat Faster Than You Do<\/span><\/h3>\n

Babies don’t sweat as efficiently as adults, so they heat up fast. Watch for flushed skin, rapid breathing, damp hair or unusual lethargy. Get to shade or AC and offer a feed.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Hydration Under 6 Months = More Feeds<\/span><\/h3>\n

Babies under 6 months should only get breast milk or formula. On hot days, they may want to feed more often\u2014that’s normal and it’s how they hydrate! Don’t offer plain water until baby’s over 6 months and started solids (and even then, small sips).<\/span><\/p>\n

5. The Car Seat Is a Heat Trap<\/span><\/h3>\n

Never leave a baby in a parked car, even for a minute. And before you buckle in on a hot day, check the metal buckles. They can hit burn temperatures fast in direct sun. A quick swipe with the back of your hand tells you everything.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Bug Protection Is Physical First<\/span><\/h3>\n

For babies under 2 months, no repellent\u2014use long sleeves, mosquito netting on the stroller, and avoid dawn + dusk outdoor time. 2 months+ can use 10-30% DEET, applied to clothing (not skin). Skip picaridin and lemon eucalyptus for babies under 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Water = Full-Time Supervision, No Exceptions<\/span><\/h3>\n

Kiddie pools, hotel pools, the beach\u2014always within arm’s reach when a baby is anywhere near water. Inflatable “floaties” are not safety devices. The AAP recommends waiting until 12+ months for infant swim classes, and only ever with a caregiver in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Dress Light<\/span><\/h3>\n

That “dress baby in one more layer than you’re wearing” rule is a cold-weather move, not a hot-weather one. In summer, babies do best in cotton, light colors and a wide-brim hat. Overheating is a real risk in over-swaddled or overdressed babies.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. Room Temp for Sleep Is 68-72\u00b0F<\/span><\/h3>\n

A fan is AAP-approved! Use a lightweight cotton sleep sack (or skip it entirely) in warm rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Traveling With Baby? Prep Like the Cooler Will Fail<\/span><\/h3>\n

Whether it’s a beach weekend or a cross-country flight, real-life prep matters\u2014<\/span>TSA rules, ice-pack timing, feeding on the go<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Numbers Worth Memorizing<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2192 Sunscreen SPF:<\/b> 30+, reapply every 2 hours, more if there’s water involved<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192 Sleep room temp:<\/b> 68-72\u00b0F<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192 DEET-safe age:<\/b> 2 months+<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2192 Water in the car seat:<\/b> never leave baby, always check buckle temperature<\/span><\/p>\n

Your baby’s first summer will be sticky, sunscreen-y and full of moments you’ll want to bottle. The best move you can make? Prep for the heat and then just be present.
